From MyPaint

I am not sure what is the overall opinion about this, but I think it would be nice that MyPaint would have a splash screen (or at least an about box). I know that this is another "not that necessary" task, but I am putting it here for a debate (that can be also done on IRC or on the ml). (... perhaps this idea is more for the 1.0 release)

I especially like the Blender's splash screen / about box idea where every release an artwork (created with Blender) is selected for that. I think it is a nice idea to promote not only the author of the selected work but also the capabilities of the application. Gimp does something similar ... Inkscape too (for about box) if I remember correctly.

I think a splash screen would make the application feel like "slow startup" and "heavy". I realize that this is the case to some extent - startup time is above 3sec for some users, sadly. I would love to give MyPaint a "fast and lightweight" feeling instead. --maxy 21:32, 14 December 2009 (UTC)
Indeed that is also my consideration. However Blender also starts pretty fast and has a very interesting splash-screen behavior (the splash stays there until the mouse is moved, so it is visible despite the quick boot). We can still use the Inkscape approach at the end (just about-screen). Lukacu 23:53, 14 December 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Implementation

  • Check this link for possible opening of the splash screen as soon as possible in the binary launcher and closing it from python when gui is ready.
